Kimmie Cross Hurst was a vibrant girl born on the Southside of Chicago in May of 1961. Growing up in the 1960's as the second oldest child in an interracial household came along with it's own set of challenges. She understood trauma at a young age after relocating with her father when her parents divorced.
Kimmie was a natural born caregiver, once she graduated from Kenwood High School she decided to fulfill her dream by attending nursing school in Chicago. She than began her adulthood as a wife and mother of her three wonderful children. Tragedy then struck when she lost her daughter to SIDS. This was the pivotal change in Kimmie's life where she would no longer be the same. From the loss of her daughter she then developed a series of mental struggles from manic depression to full blown substance abuse.
Even through Kimmie's struggles with he mental health and substance abuse, she still desired to give back and care for others. Kimmie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother sister, aunt, niece, and granddaughter. She was a small woman packed with a big heart filled with laughter and love. Unfortunately during her relapse she was not able to get adequate care outside of prescribed medication which resulted in her life ending tragically in a hit and run accident.
Unfortunately a lot of housing programs are severely understaffed and over crowded where many women like Kimmie fall through the cracks. Kimmie is the inspiration behind creating an organization where its sole focus is to provide comprehensive & impactful resources for women and children to gain healing from the inside out. Receiving the proper resources to gain healing and provide for your family should not be an obstacle course.
